Tableau in Steel

David Genzler, Corten Steel

Tableau in Steel by the late David Genzler of Ashland, Wisconsin, captures people of West Bend in many walks of life. All figures in the silhouette were drawn from people from the community, even the dog. The life-size shapes were flame cut from two-inch plate steel and then offset from the massive base slab. The result is a piece whose form changes from various angles of view. Light and shadow create different effects at different times of day. Genzler was a versatile artist whose works range from paintings to temporary installations to this permanent piece. He was known for his red suspenders and laughter. In 1992 Community Trust of West Bend donated Tableau in Steel, as the inaugural piece in the organization’s collection.

The sculpture graces the entrance of Regner Park.
