Single Heart

35. “Single Heart,” by John K. Lee, a professor of sculpture at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, speaks directly of the beauty and strength of the human form. Lee’s work, nine feet of steel bands, is both lacy and powerful, an intriguing combination. Said Lee about his work: “‘Single Heart’ is an attempt to reduce and recreate the figure into a spirit-vessel…a vessel that holds and dispenses, collects and reflects all those things that make us human – light, darkness, empathy, passion, history, context, and most especially the void. ‘Single Heart’ is an artifact, the after-image left in the wake of someone’s passing.” The work was purchased through community donations collected at a benefit blues concert in the fall of 1997. The sculpture is located in the court yard of UW-Washington County. Google Map (new window)
