The Doughboy

17. “The Doughboy,” by E. M. Viquesney of Spencer, Indiana, guards the grounds of the old Washington County Courthouse. It was dedicated in 1927 as a “Soldier’s Memorial” to the veterans of World War I, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. The sculptor hammered copper to form the piece. White speckled granite provides the base, and the nameplates of the veterans from Washington County are cast in bronze. The dedication on November 15, 1927 drew 10,000 people from across the county. Some 4,000 veterans marched in a preceding parade. The piece was restored in 1999 and rededicated in 2000. Google Map (new window)
